Want it darker?
How dark will it get?
Very dark. No shade blocks 100% of light, because a little can get in at the edges. Side channels cover most of those gaps.
- Blackout fabricEvery fabric on this page is blackout. It blocks the sun from coming through the shade itself.
- L channelAn L-shaped strip on each side. It covers the gap between the shade and the frame.
- U channelThe shade edges slide in a track on each side. This gives the tightest seal at the sides.
Both channels stick on with tape. No drilling. If tape won’t hold on your frame, a few small screws will hold the U channel. Add them when you build a blackout shade.
Mounting on the wall instead? Measure the opening and add 3 inches on each side. This covers more of the edges. Wall-mounted shades need a drill.

Every blackout fabric comes both ways. Neither one has a cord or chain to pull.
Questions
Bedroom blackout questions
What are bedroom blackout shades?
They are roller shades made with a blackout fabric. They keep your bedroom dark in the early morning and on bright afternoons. Many people call them blackout blinds.
Will a blackout shade make my room fully dark?
It will make it much darker. No shade blocks 100% of light, because a little can get in at the edges. Side channels cover the gaps at the sides and block most of that light. They stick on with tape, with no drilling.
What is the difference between blackout and room darkening?
Room darkening shades cut most of the light. Blackout shades block more of it, so they are the better pick for a bedroom. Every fabric on this page is a blackout fabric.
Do I need a drill to put them up?
Not if you choose no-drill. Anyone can put one up in about 10 minutes, with no drill, no tools and no installer. When you move out, there are no holes to patch. Our wall-mounted shades come in blackout too, but they need a drill.
Are they a good pick for a kids’ room or nursery?
Yes. Every shade comes Cordless or Motorized, so there are no cords or chains to pull. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says cordless is the safest choice when young children are around.
Can I close them without getting out of bed?
Yes, if you choose Motorized. A motorized shade goes up and down with a remote, and one remote can run several shades. Remotes are sold separately.
What sizes can I order?
Cordless shades come from 20 to 78 5/8 inches wide and up to 86 1/2 inches tall. Motorized shades go up to 94 3/8 inches tall. The shade builder shows the limits for your choices.
What if I measure wrong?
We make that shade again for 50% off its price, and shipping on the new shade is free. This is one time per shade. Ask within 30 days after it arrives.
How long does it take to get my shades?
Each shade is made to order to fit your window. Most orders arrive in 3 to 4 weeks. Shipping is free on orders of $399 or more.
